In the heart of Kibera, one of the largest urban slums in the world, stands Graceland Hope Centre—a small but impactful school serving preschool through fourth grade students. For the 150 children who attend, the school is a safe haven and a place of learning. Until recently, however, it lacked one essential resource: clean water. For twenty years, the school relied on water carried in from a public spout. The water was often unsafe, as corroded underground pipes in Kibera frequently leak and mix clean water with sewage. Acacia of Hope, founded in 2012, partnered with a local donor to install a large-scale water filtration system at Graceland Hope Centre. The system, designed to remove 99.99% of harmful bacteria, will provide safe drinking water for up to ten years with proper care. This is the second school-sized system Acacia of Hope has installed, part of a growing program to expand access to clean water in Kenya. In addition, thousands of family-sized filters have already been distributed to households, improving health and reducing waterborne illnesses. Every clean water project changes lives—helping students stay healthy, focused, and in school. Together, we can continue to bring hope, health, and opportunity to communities in need.
