The science lab in Kibera is no longer just a construction site. It has been thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared, and the transformation is beautiful to see. Sunlight now reflects off the finished countertops, the sinks are in place, and newly installed gas lines run beneath the workstations, ready for the day students conduct their first hands on experiments.
Resting on the window ledge is a simple but meaningful detail, a locally used broom made of bound fibers. Slightly dampened and held in the hand, it gathers dust instead of spreading it. It is a reminder that this lab has been shaped not only by new equipment, but by local knowledge, care, and pride. Every corner of the room has been prepared with intention so it can be a space of excellence for learning.
This room will soon be filled with young scientists asking questions, testing ideas, and discovering what is possible for their future. What stands here now is more than a lab. It is opportunity, access, and a place where potential will grow.
We are deeply grateful to the Birtcher Family Foundation for making this vision a reality. Your generosity is creating a lasting impact and opening doors for students in Kibera for years to come.
